January Rain is a creative and visual storyteller. She writes poetry, lyrics, prose, and scripts, all of which come from some deep, dismal corner where the shadows lurk. Jan is fascinated by and explores the metaphysical and supernatural in her writing while building horrific suspense that is both entertaining and thought-provoking, and sometimes mixed with a bit of a dark and morbid sense of humor. While she is no comedian, Jan does have a funny bone—even if it’s naturally cynical.
With influences such as Socrates, Hume, Rene Descartes, the Grunge era, and people like Maynard James Keenan, Stephen King, M. Night Shyamalan, Steven Spielberg, JJ. Abrams and John Saul, January Rain’s fiction typically falls under the realm of mixed genre and even incorporates some elements of science fiction.
With that being said, it would then be no surprise that she holds a B.A. in philosophy (though she stakes no claim on being an expert philosopher). Additionally, Jan holds an M.F.A. in creative writing, where she focused on visual storytelling through screenwriting and continues to hone her craft from her home in Minnesota.
While Jan grew up in small-farm-town USA, she has laid down roots in the Twin Cities for the past 17 years. In addition to writing fiction or subjecting others to philosophical debates, she is also the lead singer in a local alternative rock band (The Others).
Outside of writing, Jan loves drum and bugle corps, especially the drumline, and is a recently outed closet gamer.
